Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy
Nipple-sparing mastectomy is one of the procedures in the treatment of breast cancer cases that aims not only to clear the cancer but also to preserve the patient's aesthetic appearance. Thanks to nipple-sparing mastectomy, breast tissue can be removed while preserving the nipple and its surroundings, which are among the most natural parts of the breast. In this way, patients can maintain their body integrity after treatment and feel better aesthetically. Op. Dr. İbrahim Çolhan, who serves his patients in Adana, explained what nipple-sparing mastectomy is, why it is performed, who it is applied to, and what its advantages are for you.
What is Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy?
Nipple-sparing mastectomy is a surgical procedure in which all of the breast tissue is removed, but the breast skin, nipple, and areola region are left in place. In this method, which yields successful aesthetic results, the surgeon meticulously cleans the tissue under the nipple. Afterwards, a sample taken from this area is subjected to pathological examination to ensure that it does not contain any cancer cells. If the tumor is located far from the nipple and there is no skin involvement, this method is combined with breast reconstruction to preserve the patient's body integrity. The patient's ability to preserve their own nipple after surgical operation minimizes the psychological trauma caused by the surgery. It makes a significant contribution to the recovery process in terms of emotional, psychological, and motivational aspects.
In Which Cases is Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy Applied?
Nipple-sparing mastectomy can be applied in cases where the tumor has not spread to the nipple and the milk ducts immediately beneath it, and where oncological safety is fully ensured. For this method to be applicable, the tumor must be two centimeters away from the nipple. There should be no signs of cancer in the nipple. It is an attractive option especially for patients with a genetic risk who have had their breasts removed for preventive purposes. Nipple-sparing mastectomy also provides successful results in individuals diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Furthermore, the size and degree of ptosis (sagging) of the breast must be such as to allow for the preservation of the blood vessels supplying the nipple.
What are the Advantages of Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy?
Nipple-sparing mastectomy provides successful aesthetic results to the patient. Therefore, the resulting psychological well-being increases the patient's motivation for recovery. Preserving the natural anatomical structure of the breast reduces the patient's feeling of breast loss. When breast reconstruction is performed simultaneously, it is almost impossible to tell that the person has had a mastectomy. It provides results closest to a natural appearance. The patient continues their life with more self-confidence. After cancer treatment, they adapt to their social life more quickly. Since the nipple is preserved, the need for additional surgical procedures is eliminated. The treatment becomes more comfortable for the patient, both physically and emotionally.
What are the Risks of Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy?
Although it provides high aesthetic success, like every surgical operation, nipple-sparing mastectomy also has some risks. The most specific risk factor is necrosis, or tissue death, caused by the lack of blood circulation to the nipple and the surrounding areola tissue. The risk of necrosis is more common in patients who smoke or who have very large and sagging breasts. Another important risk factor is the presence of undetected cancer cells in the tissue under the nipple from an oncological perspective. However, this risk is minimized by performing pathological examinations during the surgery.
Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy Prices
Nipple-sparing mastectomy prices are determined by the scope of the surgery and the simultaneous breast reconstruction procedure. Whether the surgery is unilateral or bilateral also determines the prices. Factors such as the quality of materials to be used during the reconstruction procedure, the expertise and experience of the surgeon and their team, and the length of hospital stay affect the cost of the surgery. What is the Recovery Process After Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy?
While the recovery process varies depending on the scope of the surgical intervention and the simultaneous reconstruction interventions, recovery is generally achieved within a few weeks. Patients are kept under observation in the hospital for one or two days after the surgery. Drain tubes are given to the patient to prevent fluid accumulation under the skin. It is considered normal for the patient to experience mild pain, swelling, and bruising in the surgical area within the first few weeks. After a two-week recovery period, the patient can return to daily life activities. However, it is beneficial to wait four to six weeks for strenuous physical activities. Additionally, temporary or permanent numbness may occur in and around the nipple.
